Think dark / red lights with smoke effects for the dance floor. It's got two floors, with a bar on each, and a large dancefloor with DJ at the back of the lower floor. Vodka Soda / Bottom's Up is down the block from the Ritz. If I wanted to go out with friends and meet / talk to new people, this would be a solid choice. It can be a bit hit-or-miss how crowded it is on a given night. Hardware was a nice place to get a drink and socialize at the bar, and has a good sized room in the back for dancing with a decent DJ and lighting. I haven't been back in a while so I'm not sure if that's still going on.

On the plus side, they used to have $4 mixed drinks and beers all day, everyday. Mickey Spillanes has a sports bar feel - lots of tables/booths, TVs tuned into sports networks, and basically no dancing. In addition to the other Hell's Kitchen places that have been called out by other commenters, I also enjoyed Mickey Spillane's, Hardware, and Vodka Soda / Bottom's Up. If it's too intense, you can go upstairs and sing piano tunes. It's super fun and something I think every young person should experience.

I used to go so often that the guys there knew me by name.

On Tuesdays they have SPUNK! I'll let you just look that up. One part is a dance floor, the other is more of a table/chill area. Once I went and had a dance off and push up contest with the DJ. I'm pretty sure there are still no doors on the bathroom. People were friendly and even bought me drinks (I was a chick, with my gay roommmate.) The Boilermaker,There's a little lounge area by the front that's great for people watching. These may be a little intense for you guys, but imo they're classic gay bars.
